This was a little painting done in acrylics, supposedly for a St David's Day present for my friend Gwen but I had such trouble with the open daffodil that I painted and overpainted it lots of times before I felt vaguely happy with it and so it arrived much later than March 1st.
I started off with an inky bue/black background then darkened it even more and finally chose to lighten it to a blue/grey, which reminds Gwen of Welsh slate - result !
I was really pleased with the arrangement. I started off painting from life but the next day the flowers had all changed and I couldn't keep up with the speed of the buds opening. So I took some photos and added the lower buds to help the composition.
The trumpet looks better here but I tried to keep the shades pale.
Here it is before it flew off to France.
Gwen liked it.
